As we expected, with ridiculously short notice, the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) has asked the public for input on its draft Forest Management Plan (FMP) for Oregon’s state forests (including our largest: the Tillamook, Clatsop and Santiam).
These forests filter water, provide habitat for imperiled northern spotted owls, marbled murrelets and salmon, offer recreation opportunities and absorb climate pollution.

Use Cascadia Wildlands’ template and action alert form to send a written comment today. Don’t forget to add your two cents to make it personal. Due June 30th by 11:55 pm.

Good News for Oregon’s Industrial Forests
A Draft Bill to Help Trees Grow Up Before They Are Cut

Advocates are working on a bill to be introduced to the Oregon legislature this session to help ensure long-term timber supply, adequate summer water flows, soil health, fish and wildlife habitat and carbon storage.
The problem: Large timber companies used to let Douglas-fir trees grow for 80 years. This gave the most wood over time and also helped protect clean water, wildlife, homes, healthy soil, and cool forest streams. Now the rotations are between 35 and 40 years, favoring short-term profits but harming the forests and public.
The Early Timber Harvest Bill will put a fee on the largest industrial timberlands owners if they cut too early. Stay tuned.

Celebration - Warner Creek Blockade 30th Anniversary - August 23 & 24

Thirty years after the historic Warner Creek blockade stopped a fire salvage timber sale in the Willamette National Forest, the longest continuous blockade of a timber sale in U.S. history, we’re gathering to celebrate our movement!
On Sunday, August 23rd, the Living With Fire Short Film Festival will screen three short films at the Art House in Eugene highlighting ecological fire stewardship, forest defense movements from Warner Creek until now, cultural burning, and the people and organizations working to build healthier relationships with fire and the land.

On Monday, August 24th, at the WOW Hall, the Warner Creek 30th Anniversary Celebration features music by Casey Neill and Peter Wilde, a curated exhibition of archival materials from the blockade, a panel discussion, and speakers focusing on lessons learned during and since the Warner Creek campaign three decades ago.
