Geopolitical forces plainly make the case for energy independence with wind, solar and batteries. Public engagement and resistance are greater than they have been in decades and are getting stronger every day. People across the country regularly hit the streets to demand justice, with much more going on behind the scenes. We’re determined to expand, not erase, all the progress we have made! Last summer the Trump administration launched a plan to eliminate the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, which has been protecting TWO MILLION acres of Oregon’s public forests from logging & road building for over 25 years. These are some of the last intact natural forests. Any day now… The US Forest Service is expected to release a Draft Environmental Impact Statement. Our allies at Cascadia Wildlands and Oregon Wild are standing by to provide the tools and talking points to flood the public record with our comments. Let’s celebrate the U.S. District Court’s order to halt the terrible Bureau of Land Management 3,200 acre Blue & Gold timber sale in the Coast Range. Huge thanks to the fierce field-checking of the Cascadia Wildlands WildCATs (they caught them cutting old growth trees) and the legal super-powers of Oregon Wild, Umpqua Watershed and Crag Law. There’s an ECEF Signature Gathering Training with a professional with over 25 years experience on Sunday, May 28th at 6:00 pm at the Growers Market, 454 Willamette St., Eugene. The Portland Clean Energy Fund (PCEF) has raised approximately $1 billion since its inception in 2018, with projections to reach $1.6 billion by mid-2029 through a 1% retail sales tax on large corporations’ revenue. Climate Change is an Environmental Justice Issue Beat the Heat & Smoke That is why the Fossil Free Eugene Coalition, along with its many partners, holds regular Beat the Heat and Smoke workshops to provide renters and home owners with tools to reduce health risks and prepare our most impacted communities for our ever hotter and smokier summers. The events are geared toward lower income, BIPOC community members, and renters. Participants receive stipends, build air purifiers and access lots of resources. Spread the word! There are postcards to North Carolina with a mail-out date of July 31 and postcards to Maine and Georgia mail-out due May 31st. There will be many more opportunities to write between now and November! I hope to organize “card writing parties” as the election gets closer and hope you will attend! Oregon Coalition for an Environmental Rights Amendment The Oregon Constitution does not give us the right to a safe and healthy environment, unlike Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Montana, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. The Oregon Coalition for an Environmental Rights Amendment (OCERA) plans to change that. The campaign is conducting “Listening Tours” around Oregon to hear residents’ personal stories, testimonies and feedback regarding local and regional environmental harms from government action and / or inaction.
