Forest Defense - Our Best Climate Solution (Santiam State Forest) Our state forests are under attack. Take action now for the climate! Deadline: Tuesday, June 30th at 11:55 pm As we expected, with ridiculously short notice, the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) has asked the public for input on its draft Forest Management Plan (FMP) for Oregon’s state forests (including our largest: the Tillamook, Clatsop and Santiam). These forests filter water, provide habitat for imperiled northern spotted owls, marbled murrelets and salmon, offer recreation opportunities and absorb climate pollution. Use Cascadia Wildlands’ template and action alert form to send a written comment today. Don’t forget to add your two cents to make it personal. Due June 30th by 11:55 pm. Thank you! Good News for Oregon’s Industrial Forests A Draft Bill to Help Trees Grow Up Before They Are Cut Advocates are working on a bill to be introduced to the Oregon legislature this session to help ensure long-term timber supply, adequate summer water flows, soil health, fish and wildlife habitat and carbon storage. The problem: Large timber companies used to let Douglas-fir trees grow for 80 years. This gave the most wood over time and also helped protect clean water, wildlife, homes, healthy soil, and cool forest streams. Now the rotations are between 35 and 40 years, favoring short-term profits but harming the forests and public. The Early Timber Harvest Bill will put a fee on the largest industrial timberlands owners if they cut too early. Stay tuned.  Celebration - Warner Creek Blockade 30th Anniversary - August 23 & 24Thirty years after the historic Warner Creek blockade stopped a fire salvage timber sale in the Willamette National Forest, the longest continuous blockade of a timber sale in U.S. history, we’re gathering to celebrate our movement! On Sunday, August 23rd, the Living With Fire Short Film Festival will screen three short films at the Art House in Eugene highlighting ecological fire stewardship, forest defense movements from Warner Creek until now, cultural burning, and the people and organizations working to build healthier relationships with fire and the land.  On Monday, August 24th, at the WOW Hall, the Warner Creek 30th Anniversary Celebration features music by Casey Neill and Peter Wilde, a curated exhibition of archival materials from the blockade, a panel discussion, and speakers focusing on lessons learned during and since the Warner Creek campaign three decades ago. We’re speaking out during June’s city council public comment sessions (June 8th & 22nd, 7:30 pm at City Hall). Come and support climate action! There’s been progress, but we’ve only reduced our community GHGs by 11%, falling very short of the 50% by 2030 goal set forth in the Climate Recovery Ordinance (2014). The new Climate Action Plan 2.0 2025 Annual Report and the city’s Climate Dashboard are current and illustrate progress, including the expansion of the RidersEd program, a 1,200% increase in EVs registered since 2017, 5.3 MWs of solar installed on homes since 2021 (powering about 580 homes), and 53% recycling or recovery of waste through composting and recycling. There is still MUCH progress to be made and 350 Eugene, along with partners in the Fossil Free Eugene Coalition, are working with officials and staff to take even more meaningful and swift action. At the federal level, the Trump administration has proposed rescinding the popular 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule, which protects almost 2-million acres of Oregon’s public forests and 45-million acres nationwide from the scourge of logging and road building. Meanwhile, we’re also waiting for the official comment period for the new Bureau of Land Management (“Revised’) Logging Plan for Western forests to drop. Maybe in July. Urge Oregon’s Congressmembers to Protect Western Oregon Forests – Oppose HR 7603 — HR 7603, or the "O&C Removal Act of 2026," would make timber production to fund county governments the primary purpose of public forests governed by the original O&C Act – the lands BLM manages. This bill would prioritize maximizing logging above all other values, weakening safeguards for fish and wildlife, shrinking stream protections, and opening vast areas of public forest to the kind of large-scale clearcutting that pushed species like coho salmon and northern spotted owls toward extinction in the first place. All of us – whether we choose to become human rights lawyers or corporate counsel, or choose never to practice law at all but instead become professors or entrepreneurs or disappear anonymous among the poor or stay at home and raise bright, delicious children – all of us, without exception, are qualified to participate in the rescue of the world.” Let’s be fearlessly committed.
